Welcome to the Reception Area

At Weston Creek Veterinary Hospital, we believe in quality service, and this begins in the spacious reception area.

A warm and caring welcome is guaranteed, whether you are waiting for a consultation or collecting your pet after surgery.

All our records are on computer so files are always legible and easily retrieved, providing a full medical record, including medications, at the touch of a button (or two).

Reception has two waiting areas, so anxious pets can be separated from rowdier patients.  Also clients enter and leave via separate doors so congestion and possible confrontation can be minimised.

Pet foods, non-prescription drugs, shampoos, collars, leads, grooming and training aids are on display in the waiting room and available for purchase. Cool water is always available, and tea and coffee are also available on request.

The Hospital has an easily accessible car park within the grounds, and there are no steps to negotiate anywhere in the Hospital complex. Adjoining parkland provides a zone of relaxation for anxious clients and pets.

From Reception into the Examination Rooms

Another feature of our reception area is the central atrium, which creates a relaxed atmosphere and helps to brighten the reception area with natural light.

The reception area allows access to three consultation rooms in addition to the remainder of the hospital. This is like a miniature version of a human hospital, containing surgery, X-ray, pharmacy, hospital wards and laboratory areas.

THE CONSULT ROOMS

Consultation rooms have a practical layout to ensure efficiency and cleanliness for each patient. We have ducted vacuuming to each room so that hair and dirt do not build up between consultations.

One informal consultation room is available for discussions of more complex and emotive problems.

Behind the scenes - the Pharmacy & Laboratory

Immediately behind the consultation rooms are the pharmacy, laboratory and food storage areas.

THE PHARMACY

The pharmacy contains prescription and non-prescription drugs. All drug labels are printed out here automatically, and provide clear and legible instructions. (Naturally, all prescription drugs are kept safely under lock and key, and the practice is fitted with the latest in security systems).

THE LABORATORY

Adjoining the pharmacy are the Hospital's laboratory facilities, allowing quick bench-top analysis of blood, urine and other specimens.

Our facilities include an IDEXX machine, which analyses blood biochemistry and electrolytes, allowing faster diagnosis and "on-the-spot" pre-anaesthetic profiles.

Previously we relied on off-site Pathology services, which meant results were not available for a day or two - now we have results within the hour.

The Treatment Room, the heart of the Hospital

THE GENERAL WORK AREA

The Treatment room is the centre of Hospital activity. Here is where most of the Hospital animals are housed, and all non-sterile surgeries are carried out. The open layout is designed to allow easy monitoring of patients recovering from anaesthetics and those in hospital for observation.

If required, cages can be quickly converted to mini Intensive Care Units by the addition of intravenous fluid pumps, heat pads and/or intra-nasal oxygen supplementation.

THE DENTAL TREATMENT AREA

Also located in the Treatment Room is a permanent dental station. The dental machine is the equivalent of the human dentist's machine, complete with drill, sonic scaler, polisher, suction apparatus and flushing syringe. It ensures rapid cleaning and extraction of teeth if necessary, minimizing prolonged anaesthetics and repeated procedures.

Surgical scrub sinks, ultrasonic cleaner and autoclaves are the main items of the surgical preparation area.

THE SCRUBBING AND STERILISING AREA

At this work station, our veterinary nurses clean, collate and sterilise the surgical instrument packs used for sterile surgeries, there surgeons also scrub and prepare for these procedures.

Surrounding the Treatment Room are the Operating Theatre and its associated preparation areas, the isolation and outpatient wards, and the Radiology Suite. The wards are designed to meet special airflow requirements and in the isolation ward, special disinfection.

The Operating Theatre

All sterile surgery is performed in the Operating Theatre.

Regular procedures include desexing, bone plating and other fracture repairs, Caesarean sections and other abdominal surgeries. The room has a dedicated ventilation system to help minimise contamination.

Equipment used in the Operating Theatre includes a diathermy unit, anaesthetic machine, anaesthetic monitors, and suction pump. A theatre nurse is assigned to assist the surgeon in monitoring anaesthetics during surgical procedures.

Heart rate, respiration rate, oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations are checked and recorded regularly, and where necessary, continuous ECG readings are taken to monitor heart function. Additional veterinarians and nurses assist in more complex procedures, such as open chest surgery.

The Radiology Suite

High quality radiographs are produced here using a 300 mA X-ray machine and an automatic processor.  A work station and a small reference library enable veterinarians to work up cases away from the happenings of the Treatment Room.

Cat boarding

Long Stay and Senior Stay Cattery

The final stop in our hospital tour is the boarding cattery. We have both short and long stay boarding facilities. Short stay is recommended for up to 7 days, and Long stay is for more than a 7 day stay. We additionally have several Senior stay cages that are lower to the ground to ensure our eldery guests do not jump down and therefore prevent injury.

Boarding is tailored to suit individual variations such as length of stay, feeding regimes, and medication requirements. For our clients' convenience, additional services such as worming and grooming
can be arranged during the boarding period, and of course, any boarding cats displaying signs of ill-health receive prompt veterinary attention.

A comfortable temperature is maintained in the Hospital by a combination of in-floor slab heating and evaporative cooling. To maximise the health of pets in our facility, all cats accepted for boarding must have been vaccinated within the past year.

This completes our tour of the Hospital. We hope you've enjoyed the look behind the scenes, and that you'll visit us in person soon.
