The other half of the weight loss equation is to eat the right things in the right quantities.  Many animals need fewer calories than the feeding guidelines on the packet suggest.  Therefore it is very easy to overfeed your pet, and consequently you have to reduce food intake a lot to loose weight.  This can lead to pestering for food, scavenging and behavioural problems.

Therefore it is best to use a specific weight loss formula while trying to achieve your weight loss goal.  These foods a specially designed to increase weight loss, while feeding enough to keep your pet satisfied and keeping them full by providing fuel that is slow to digest.

When introducing a new diet it is important to do so gradually so that you do not cause gut upsets by sudden changes in diet.  Start with 75% of the old diet and 25% of the new diet for a couple of days, then mix it half half for 2 days and then 25% to 75% of the new diet for a couple of days before feeding only the new diet.  Of course if your pet has any diarrhea or vomiting consult your veterinarian.

Once you have your pet on a weight loss diet there are few strategies to help you keep on track.  Many pets are used to snacking.  To cope with this measure out the set amount of food for the day and keep it in a sealed container, it is best for onl;y one person to be in charge of this.  Feed a little of this in the morning and set some aside for an evening meal.  The rest can be fed in small portions or given as treats throughout the day so your pet can keep to their usual routine.  It is best to feed 2 smaller meals rather than one large one in any case.

Another way to keep your dog occupied and feeling full is to use a treat ball or kong to feed some of their food.  The kong can also be used as a low calorie treat by filling it with water and freezing it so as it slowly melts your dog can lick out the cooling water.

As with exercise the secret is to stay committed to the plan and persevere, and the results will be a happier, healthier and more active pets. That will not only live longer but also better lives.
